Ceramic washbasins are different from a number of basin products because they are very clean-looking, appear softer, and have a finely polished, smooth glaze. Nevertheless, careful consideration of the installation and care procedure will result in a longer effective life. Below are the procedures for installation of the washbasin that are applicable for various models.
Countertop Washbasin Installation
Suitable for: Bathrooms of all styles, particularly those with thin countertops or where the washbasin design is intended to be prominent.
Installation Steps:
- Place the washbasin upside down on the countertop, ensuring sufficient clearance beneath for the tap supply pipes, drainage components, and inlet angle valve. Trace the basin’s outline onto the countertop using a pen. Drill a small pilot hole slightly inside the traced outline, then cut an installation opening 10–15mm smaller than the outline perimeter.
- Install the tap and drainage components onto the basin according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Position the washbasin within the cut-out opening, verify alignment, check clearances, and mark the edges. After verification, turn the basin upside down and apply a sealant such as silicone around the outer rim. Carefully position the basin into the countertop opening, aligning with the marked points, then press firmly into place.
Note:
- The installation position of the washbasin on the countertop must account for the dimensions of the tap. If positioned too close to the wall, the drain pull rod may prove impossible to install or function correctly.
- The recommended clearance between the countertop surface and floor is 820mm.
Sealing procedure: Apply silicone sealant or sealant evenly along the joint between the basin and countertop to ensure a watertight seal and prevent leakage. The countertop-mounted basin must not be used for 24 hours after sealing and fixing with adhesive.
Undermount Washbasin Installation
Suitable for: Bathrooms prioritising clean aesthetics and ease of cleaning, typically paired with integrated countertops.
Installation Steps:
- Prepare mounting brackets: Customise brackets to the basin’s dimensions, ensuring secure support.
- Install the Basin: Determine the basin’s position using the cutting template. Trace the basin’s outline onto the countertop along the template’s edges. Drill a small pilot hole inside the traced line, then cut along the outline to create the basin opening. Smooth the edges. Accurately cut the tap installation holes according to the dimensions of the taps and worktop.
- Install the metal brackets: Securely install the metal brackets to support the basin, based on its size and position on the worktop. Temporarily place the basin into the cut-out opening to confirm positioning, check clearances, and mark the edges. After verification, place the basin flat. Apply silicone sealant to the rim’s upper edge, then carefully lower the basin beneath the countertop. Align with the installation holes and the previously marked position, pressing firmly upwards. Tighten the metal bracket’s adjustment bolts to secure the basin tightly to the countertop.
- Once the sealant has cured, install the tap onto the countertop following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Advantages: Undermount basins allow water and foam to be easily swept into the basin from the countertop, eliminating hygiene dead zones for a clean, tidy surface. Simultaneously, the concealed basin beneath maximises usable countertop space, providing ample room for toiletries.
Wall-mounted Washbasin Installation
Suitable for: Compact bathrooms where floor space is limited, effectively saving floor area and enhancing visual openness. Wall-mounted washbasins are directly fixed to the wall, suspended below without relying on a vanity unit.
Installation Steps:
- Marking the Position: Measure and determine the installation height (typically 820mm from floor level; note: installation height refers to the distance from floor to the upper surface of the front edge of the mounting bracket). Align the basin along its centreline with the installation position, adjust for horizontal centring, and mark the mounting hole locations on the wall.
- Drilling and Fitting Brackets: Using a hammer drill, bore holes at the marked positions. Install expansion bolts or suspension bolts, ensuring the brackets are securely fixed.
- Hanging the Basin: Position the basin over the brackets, adjust for horizontal centring, and secure by tightening the nuts.
- Installing Support Brackets (if required): Certain wall-mounted basins require additional brackets for reinforcement. Securely connect these brackets to both the basin and the wall surface.
Advantages: The suspended design of wall-mounted washbasins creates visual openness beneath, preventing small spaces from feeling cramped. With no floor-level hygiene dead zones, cleaning extends effortlessly to the wall base for exceptional convenience.
Things You Should Notice Before Installation
- Turn off the water supply and ensure all supply and drainage pipes are correctly positioned.
- Take care to protect the ceramic surface during installation to prevent scratches or impacts.
- Ensure the tap and drainage components are securely connected to prevent leaks.
- Select high-quality sealant or sealing materials to guarantee waterproofing effectiveness.
- After installation, conduct a water flow test to check for any leaks.
